Bartholdi was the creator of this magnificent structure, by far the largest work of art in the city on public display. It was in 1871 that the local authority decided they wanted to commission a monument to mark the bravery of the people of the area during the siege that took place that year and the previous year. This 22 metre long 11 metre high structure was the result and has become one of the symbols of Belfort.
