In the 19th Century, the city of Belfort was subjected to a series of sieges that threatened to spell an end to the way of life of the people of the community. Thanks to the actions of a couple of brave generals, the city was saved, and this statue is a representation of the gratitude of the people and the administration for all that people did to defend the community. It was erected in 1901 and is one of the more famous monuments in Belfort.
