In 1307 the town charter was signed that ensured the upper class citizens of the community would be responsible for the defence and the upkeep of Belfort. This was one of the main constructions put into place to not only defend, but to link the outer walls with the central castle, hence its grand name. The tower was modified on several occasions and includes some of the influences of Vauban who overhauled the entire ramparts in the 17th Century.
