This fascinating gateway was designed by the famous French architect Vauban in 1687 and served as the primary means of crossing the citys fortifications and entering the old part of the settlement. The gateway has been beautifully adorned with carving in the stone, including the year of the structure and the coat of arms of Louis XIV and his crest of a golden sun that was synonymous with his tenure as king.
