This area was once home to the old market place in Belfort, but it was decided in the 1930s that the area was to become disused. The opportunity arose for a public garden to be built and the designers were keen on creating something that united men and women in a sense of peace, a complete contrast to the war that had ravaged Europe in the early 20th Century. Many thousands of roses were planted and this magnificent garden was a result.
