In 1912, the idea of building this community project was first formulated by a trade union in the town. However it took a good decade before the plan was taking any further. Eventually it was turned over to a series of architects who between them came up with the interesting and extremely functional building that we see today. As well as being an administrative and social centre it is home to a small gallery and theatre.
