The Second World War was a tragic time for much of Europe, and under Nazi occupation, the French people suffered greatly at the hands of the German army. This monument is one of the most powerful in the heart of Paris and represents the memory of the two hundred thousand or so French people that were killed in concentration and death camps in the 1940s. This number includes at least seventy five thousand Jewish people. The monument is bleak and poignant, separating a courtyard from the Seine with a small barred window and 200,000 pieces of backlit glass.
