It was in 1908 that the council of the city of Marseille decided to create a competition to design a monumental feature of the area. The site was chosen as being outside this grand railway station at the heart of the city. The competition was won by well know architects Serres and Arnal. The amazing 104 ornamental stairs that lead to the station are one of the iconic images of the city of Marseille and were opened officially in 1928.
