Today, the Conciergerie is attached to the Paris law courts, but in 1391 when it was constructed, the building served as the first major prison in the city. An iconic medieval structure, the perfectly preserved piece of architecture looms over the river. Within the building are some delightful examples of gothic architecture. The facility has been converted into a museum and has reconstructed cells, guard rooms and dungeons for tourists to view.
