Situated at the very heart of the citadel is this ancient church, which has been protected from the many battles of the area by the strong high walls of the citadel. The church was built in the 13th Century and then again rebuilt in the late 16th Century. There are many interesting artefacts within the church building including a statue of Jesus that was paraded through the streets of the town in 1533 shortly before the Turkish army who had been besieging the city gave up and left
