Overlooking the lower part of the town and offering some of the most spectacular views in the whole of Calvi, the citadel is one of the most historically important parts of the town. It is situated about eighty metres above the town on a granite promontory. It was built by the Genoese at some time in the 16th Century. The old town gates are testimony to the loyalty that the people of Calvi had to Genoa, with the motto the city of Calvi, always be faithful inscribed above them.
