The present prefecture building in Orléans has a long history which can be dated back to Roman times; in fact it is thought that the building is built on the site of the old Roman forum. The building was developed extensively in the 17th Century when a group of local monks invested a great deal of time and effort into improving the building. The finishing touches to what we see today were not completed until the 19th Century when this became one of the finest prefecture buildings in all of France.
