This is one of the most famous squares in Paris, designed by Henry IV, who had a very particular taste when it came to architecture. Just like several others that the monarch had a hand in, this square is perfectly symmetrical. It was a favoured place for duels in years gone by. The area has also been the home to such luminaries as Cardinal de Richelieu and Victor Hugo. Today, the square is one of the most popular places for tourists to gather, at the heart of the city.
