Charles Quint ordered the building of this large fortified castle in the late 1500s in order to provide a place of safety and defence for the town. At this time there were many attacks on the city and it was important to have a vantage point and impenetrable area in the community where the nobility and army could defend themselves from. Many changes were made to the building in the 16th and 17th Century, but the main structure is still on show to visitors.
