It was in 1810 that the stone quarries of Paris became disused, and it was decided that these vast tunnels under the city should be used as tombs. This quite chilling area of the city can be visited, and those who go there can see the place where over six million Parisians have been buried throughout the centuries. During the Second World War, the maze of tunnels beneath the city was used by the French Resistance to avoid the occupying German forces.
