Situated at the summit of the butte Montmartre, the highest point in Paris, the Basilica of the Sacre Coeur overlooks the city. The idea of building a Roman Catholic church dedicated to the sacred heart was first conceived after the Franco-Prussian war ended in 1870. Paul Adabie fought off competition from seventy or so other architects to design this building, which was constructed in 1884. The building is one of the most visited in the French capital and offers spectacular views.
