Affectionately known as ‘the good mother’, this is truly one of the landmarks of the city of Marseille, standing on one of its highest points, towering above the large sprawling urban area below. One of the finest examples of 19th Century Byzantine-Romanesque architecture in France, the church is topped with a thirty foot statue of the Virgin Mary on the roof that can be seen from sea, and is designed to protect the many sailors using the port of Marseille.
