This beautiful abbey was built in the 5th Century, on the burial ground of a Roman martyr, Saint Victor, who had a close connection with the city of Marseille. The marvelously preserved historic monument is a great tourist attraction. The abbey was destroyed and rebuilt on several occasions until Pope Urban V fortified it in the 14th Century. Much of the remaining building dates from that period. The crypt is particularly noted for its beauty.
