This impressive looking building dates all the way back to the 12th Century and has been an important part of the Marseille architectural history ever since. The arched building was originally known as the Hospital Saint Esprit as is served as a hospice for a long period for the sick and dying in the city. On several occasions throughout the centuries the building has been enlarged and really only reached the appearance that visitors enjoy today in 1866 after the architect Esprit Brun had finished a series of developments.
