Built in the 17th Century as a point of defence, Fort Saint-Nicholas was the brainchild of the sun king Louis XIV. He wanted to fortify the city of Marseille, as it was such an important part of the economy of France, and vulnerable from attack by sea. The great fort is one of the iconic images of the city, looming over the Mediterranean with a majestic charm. Many visitors like to stroll around the fort which offers great sea views.
