One of the most spectacular pieces of ancient architecture in Marseille, this grand fort guards the entrance to the northern side of the old port in the city. The foundations were laid in the 12th Century and it was developed into a larger and even more impenetrable building in several stages throughout the 14th and the 16th Century. It is possible to take tours of the grand fort which offers fine views of the port and the city; they are usually arranged by the local tourism office.
