The Carmelites have been an important order of monks in this town since the 16th Century, and this large monastery at the heart of the community is one of the lasting architectural reminders of their presence. The fine looking building is well worth a look inside to see the impressive courtyard and the attentive craftsmanship. During the French Revolution the monastery was used as a prison, but survived the experience.
