This tower has seen several uses throughout the many hundreds of years it has stood guarding the port of Cannes. It is probably best known for being part of the legend associated with the ‘man in the iron mask’. It is said that the prisoner escaped from the island of Saint-Marguerite, across the water from Cannes, and then was again captured and put in this tower. Many claim that the ghost of this infamous prisoner still haunts the ancient building.
