Situated to the north of the Porte de Genes, which was for many centuries the only entrance point to the city is the Grand Bastion. This corner of the citadel is one of the most heavily fortified and would have been a place where the army of the town could stand and watch what was happening in the broader picture of a battle. Today, this area of outstanding military architecture, is open to the public and afford fine views of the town, sea and countryside.
