The oldest part of Carcassonne is located within a marvellous walled city, which from afar reminds one of a fairytale castle. Unlike many walled cities across Europe, it is still possible to walk around almost the entire length of this beautiful fortified city. The views of the new city and the surrounding countryside are unparalleled from this magnificent vantage point that was once used to fight off aggressive armies. The architecture of the walls is a point of historical interest.
