In 1431, Joan of Arc was convicted of heresy and dragged through the streets of Rouen to this place where she was burned at the stake. She became a symbol of martyrdom in France and her legend has lived on for the many centuries since her death. This church was built on the site of her execution to commemorate her sacrifice and celebrate her life. A fine piece of architecture it remains one of the most visited sites in Rouen still today.
