This opera was established in 1714 to give an alternative to the rather serious and stringently controlled Italian style of opera that was prevalent across Europe. Although the name would suggest it, the performances do not have to be comic in the humorous sense, although some are, but merely break from the rules of Italian opera, and be more relaxed and informal in their approach. The current building was constructed in 1898.
