This museum was created in the private home of Édouard André and Nélie Jacquemart, to display the vast collection of fine art that they had collected throughout their lifetime. Great philanthropists they were committed to allowing the general public access to their collection and sharing the beauty of some of the finest works from Europe. The collection was bequeathed to the Institute of France and opened to the public in 1913.
