The great Moliere is probably the best known playwright to be associated with this great theatre, the only state owned theatre in the whole of France. Louis XIV founded the theatre in 1690 as a home for several acting troupes who were without a permanent home in central Paris. The theatre remains one of very few establishments in France that still has a permanent troupe of actors who are contracted to the theatre and involved in all of its productions.
