Arc de Triomphe de la Porte Saint-Denis

This triumphant archway is one of several that have been erected around Paris. It was long a tradition that Kings and military leaders would mark their military success with an archway to the city. Erected in 1670 by Louis XIV, the archway formed the 17th Century entrance to the city. It is a beautiful stone structure which towers above the surrounding streets and attracts visitors all year around.
