This area at the heart of Frejus would have once been the site of a Roman temple. However after the Romans left, the locals decided that the same spot should be used to build a magnificent cathedral. Constructed in the 11th and 12th Century there is little dispute amongst architects and historians that this is one of the first Gothic buildings in the south of France, fusing the traditional and classical with the modern Gothic techniques of the day, a real masterpiece of ecclesiastical design.
